Hundreds of workers at a Japanese electronics company, PT Sun Creation Indonesia (SCI), staged a rally at the Batam City Council on Monday to demand that their salaries and Idul Fitri bonus be paid before the holiday.
The three Japanese managers fled in early July, leaving the 732 workers in limbo.
Federation of Indonesian Metal Workers Unions (FSPMI) secretary Suprapto told The Jakarta Post that none of the workers had received their base salaries or other allowances when the three managers left Batam without notice.
"The company no longer has any valuable assets. Even if we sold the assets, it would not be enough to pay the workers," he said. "That's why we want the City Council to help them, especially with Idul Fitri approaching."
The Batam Free Trade Zone Management Agency has tasked its liaison officer in Japan, Hajime Kinoshita, to approach the managers and find out their reason for fleeing the country, spokesman Ilham Eka Hartawan said.
"If PT SCI management is cooperative and willing to fulfill its obligations to the workers, we will not file a police report," he said.
( Tjonge, me no snafu this too much, Jap managers ababdon ship, workers no pay and now screaming outside the City Council for them to pay them?) siK
