Draft presidential decree ready for Antasari`s temporary dismissal
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has made a draft presidential decree ready to be signed for temporary dismissal of chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Antasari Azhar.
The presidential special staff for legal affairs, Denny Indrayana, said here on Tuesday the signing of the draft was just waiting for an official letter from the police declaring Antasari as a suspect.
"The presidential decree is already drafted and will be issued soon after the letter from the police, now still being prepared, is received by the president," he said.
Denny said President Yudhoyono had received a letter from the KPK leadership on May 5 asking him to issue a presidential decree to temporarily dismiss Antasari in connection with his status as a suspect in the murder of company director Nasrudin Zulkarnaen.
He said the issuance of the presidential decree would be based on three bases namely Article 32 of Law Number 30 of 2002 on KPK, official letter from the police declaring Antasari as a suspect and official request on May 5, 2009 from the KPK leadership.
Denny said the issuance of the decree would be done soon after the President received a letter from the police.
"A quick process is needed to separate Antasari`s legal process from the KPK and to save the KPK and its corruption eradication agenda," he said.
After being interrogated on May 4 by the police Antasari was immediately declared as a suspect and held at the police`s detention center.
Antasari was charged with violating Article 340 of the Criminal Code on premeditated murder carrying a maximum penalty of death.
Antasari, a former public prosecutor, has been suspended from all his duties as KPK chairman at a KPK leadership meeting on May 1, 2009. (*)
