A Malaysian police officer arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping an Indonesian woman is facing 20 years in prison and caning, Indonesian officials have said.
The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur said in a press statement on Saturday that it had sought clarification from the police precinct in the town of Kajang, in the Malaysian state of Selangor, from whom it obtained information on the potential punishment.
“The perpetrator, who has been reported by the victim, has been detained over the [rape] allegation and is being threatened with those punishments,” the statement said, according to the state-run Antara news agency.
A member of the Kajang Police was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly raped a 29-year-old Indonesian woman during an immigration raid in the Banda Baru Bangi township, a small area near the district capital of Kajang, on Dec. 10.
Based on information it has gathered, the Indonesian embassy’s taskforce for Indonesian citizen protection said three Malaysian police officers raided a house inhabited by the victim with several other Indonesian citizens, including her husband, on Dec. 10.
Four of them, including the woman but not her husband, failed to produce proper immigration documents and were thus taken to a nearby police station.
“On the way, though, the three other Indonesian citizens were released while the victim was taken to the Bangi police office,” the embassy said.
One of the police officers then took her to a hotel in Kajang and allegedly raped her twice before escorting her back to the house.
The victim immediately reported the incident to a different police precinct.
The Indonesian embassy said it was continuously communicating with the woman’s husband, who said she was fine now. The couple have since left the house in Banda Baru Bangi.
The embassy also said it would seek to meet on Monday with Malaysian police investigators who are handling the case.
