A funeral was held on Wednesday for a younger brother of Yogyakarta’s sultan, who passed away at the age of 58.
Gusti Bendoro Prince Haryo Joyokusumo, a younger brother of Sultan Hamengkubowono X, died at Medistra Hospital in Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon.
His other brother, Kanjeng Gusti Prince Harya Hadiwinoto, said Joyokusumo had been treated at the hospital for two weeks due to complications from diabetes as well as kidney problems, which he had been suffering from for the past four years.
He showed signs of slight recovery during his stint at the hospital.
“But God has wished otherwise,” Hadiwinoto told Indonesian news portal vivanews.com. “He instead summoned [Joyokusumo].”
The funeral, led by the sultan, was held on Wednesday afternoon.
Joyokusumo’s remains arrived at Yogyakarta’s Adisucipto Airport on Wednesday morning, before being laid for viewing at the prince’s family residence, Ndalem Joyokusuman, located on Jalan Rotowijayan. The location was flocked to by hundreds of mourners.
An Islamic prayer was held at nearby Rotowijayan Mosque before the remains were transported to Hastorenggo cemetery in Kotagede for burial, the state-run Antara news agency reported.
Joyokusumo served as a lawmaker in Indonesia’s House of Representatives from 2004 to 2007, when he resigned. He since then focused on taking care of the Yogyakarta Palace’s internal affairs.
He is survived by a wife, B. R. A. Joyokusumo, and three kids — Jayaningrum, Jayaningrat and Jayaningtyas.
