Tanjungpinang - South Koreas Samsung wants to build a bridge between the free trade zone island of Batam and its neighboring island of Bintan in the province of Riau Islands.
"Samsung and a team of the provincial administration are discussing the proposal," Governor Muhammad Sani said here on Thursday.
Sani said Samsung is not the only investor indicating interest in building a bridge between the two islands.
He said investors from other countries such as China have also indicated keen interest, but no concrete steps have been made.
Earlier, South Korean Ambassador Kim Young Sun and a number of other investors from that country met with Sani in the provincial city of Tanjungpinang to discuss proposal to build the bridge but there was no follow-up of the discussion.
Sani said construction of a bridge to span the 6.7 kilometer distance between the two island would cost an estimated Rp7 trillion.
"The cost would include for the construction of a container port in Tanjung Sauh," he said.

(Oh yes, it is clearly evident oversea's investors are interested, they will own a majority interest in the bridge and the new shipping port, demanding exorbitant fees and or charges, funneling the proceeds back to their respective countries with little of it remaining for Riau or in the back pockets of a few. siK' comments)
