Six outsourced personnel working for state electricity company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) died by electrocution on Wednesday as they were pulling power cables near the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar, a report said.
The six died while pulling the cables near a main electricity distribution station in Gowa, South Sulawesi, at around 4:00 p.m. They were working in the rain, the state-run Antara news agency said.
Jumardin, a witness, was quoted by Antara as saying that the workers died instantly. The bodies were taken to the Bayangkara police hospital in Makassar for autopsies.
“They were not far from each other — between five and 10 meters — and they were pulling a cable from the station,” he said. “Suddenly, they somehow got electrocuted and died on the spot.”
Abdul Wahab Samana, the local PLN spokesman, said he had not received a report on the incident but vowed to look into it.
Gowa district police spokesman Adj. Comr. Andryani Lilikay confirmed the incident. He said five men and one woman died in the accident. Their identities remain unknown.
