Three loyalists of the terrorist fugitive Santoso have been arrested in connection with the delivery of a package containing a bomb sent from Surabaya, East Java to Makassar, South Sulawesi, National Police chief Gen. Sutarman confirmed.
“The package was sent from Surabaya through a logistics company to Makassar. [The bomb] was initially aimed at several targets in Surabaya, but maybe they did not find the right moment [to attack there] so they targeted South Sulawesi [instead],” he said in Jakarta on Friday.
Among the bombing targets were police facilities in Surabaya.
Following the discovery, the police’s Densus 88 counterterrorism unit arrested three suspects in the city of Makassar as well as the provinces of Bengkulu and Lampung in Sumatra, on Monday.
“They are part of Santoso’s group. One was involved in the murder of two police officers in Poso [Central Sulawesi] and a series of attacks there. The suspect learned how to assemble bombs and joined paramilitary training in Tamanjeka, Poso,” Sutarman added.
The jungles of Gunung Biru, Tamanjeka, are believed to be where Santoso’s group is hiding.
