The Jakarta Globe, Oct 13 2015,

Jakarta. Only 13 percent of public transportation vehicles in the capital meet the minimum safety standards, officials said on Tuesday.

The Jakarta Police's traffic directorate in cooperation with officials from the Transportation Ministry's land transportation directorate general has been inspecting vehicles at three bus terminals in East and Central Jakarta since Sept. 17.

Inspectors found that the vast majority of large and small buses checked at the Pulogadung, Kampung Rambutan and Senen terminals was not fit for the road.

Several TransJakarta buses were also found to be defective, but officials would not provide an exact number.

The chief of the police's traffic directorate, Adj. Sr. Comr. Budiyanto, said the raids were aimed at minimizing the number of traffic accidents on the capital's notoriously busy roads.

“Other than checking the physical condition of the vehicles, we also checked the drivers' licenses," Budiyanto said. "And if the vehicle's condition is extremely bad, we will stop it from operating, permanently.”

The officials said they would keep performing checks twice a week until December.
