A mid-ranking official with the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry died in a posh Medan hotel room on Sunday after reportedly consuming a tonic promising to increase sexual stamina and disrobing in front of a woman.
Turman Siagian, 49, was the head of the planning and organization division of the ministry. He was in town on business.
“It is believed he died of a heart attack,” North Sumatra Police spokesman Heru Prakoso said.
But the woman — identified as A.M., 38 — said Turman fell to the ground and began seizing in the bathroom after drinking a bottle of tonic that promised to enhance his sexual ability.
A.M. called the receptionist, who found Turman already dead when he reached the room.
“I met him at the karaoke,” A.M. told Merdeka.com. “We didn’t do anything. He had just taken off his clothes when he fell down.”
Police said Turman’s family had retrieved the body and refused an autopsy. They denied the woman’s claims, explaining that Turman was an honest, church-going man.
“My brother died because of a heart attack,” his brother Viktor Siagian told detik.com. “He never did anything strange or improper. He was well-respected [in the community].”
Turman’s remains have been sent to Bekasi, West Java, where a funeral will be held today.
