Fire engulfed Mangga Besar subdistrict, West Jakarta, on Friday, destroying around 70 houses in the area.
West Jakarta Fire Agency operational division chief Sutarno said that the fire was probably caused by an electricity short circuit in a dormitory owned by the Yesus Kristus Church.
“We are still investigating the cause of the fire but it was probably caused by an electricity glitch,” Sutarno said as quoted by Berita Jakarta.
The fire started at 11 a.m. and was extinguished two hours later after the agency dispatched 29 fire trucks.
Mangga Besar subdistrict chief Sayuti said that his office was still listing the number of the fire victims who were evacuated to the subdistrict office’s yard and nearby mosque.
“We have coordinated with the [West Jakarta] social agency on handling the displaced,” Sayuti said.
Three firefighters sustained injuries when trying to extinguish the flames and were rushed to a nearby community health center.
