Jakarta. Popular Surabaya mayor Tri Rismaharini has denied reports she has been offered a ministerial post in Joko Widodo’s government, saying she does not have any intention of stepping down as the city’s mayor.
“I told Bu Mega a long time ago that I do not wish to be a minister,” Rismaharini said on Monday, referring to Megawati Soekarnoputri, the chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).
The composition of Joko’s cabinet is shrouded in mystery, with the names of who will lead the 34 ministers still unannounced, despite Joko taking over leadership of the world’s third-largest democracy from Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono today.
Rismaharini, who spoke with reporters at the House of Representatives (DPR) in Senayan this morning, said she has not been offered a position in cabinet — shooting down rumors that she had.
“I hope Indonesia will be more prosperous and I believe Jokowi [and] JK will be able to make our people prosper,” she said.
Rismaharini is one of hundreds of leaders from across Indonesia and around the world attending Joko’s inauguration as Indonesia’s seventh president.
