From Antara News, 23 Agustus 2015

Hong Kong - Indonesias National Anti-Narcotic Agency (BNN) said 129 Indonesians are currently facing death sentence abroad due to narcotic cases.

"The majority of them are migrant workers who have been tricked to become couriers by international narcotic syndicates and most of them are women," BNN chief Anang Iskandar said to ANTARA here on Sunday.

He said "in view of that I appeal to Indonesian citizens especially migrant workers in Hong Kong as well as in Macau to be alert over the danger of narcotic crimes wherever they work. They must not be easily deceived. Be careful when someone wanted to entrust something to them and to strangers."

Anang meanwiled asked Indonesians who use narcotic drugs abroad to immediately stop and if they face addiction immediately ask for help from the Indonesian representative office to get recommendations for rehabilitation.

"We are cooperating with a number of countries bilaterally or multilaterally to prevent and eradicate narcotic abuse especially to cut narcotic international networks that use Indonesian citizens as their couriers or the country as a narcotic smuggling route," he said.

He said demand for narcotic drugs in Indonesia is still very high making the country to be the main route of narcotic smuggling.

BNN predicts there are around 4.2 milion narcotic users in Indonesia alluring narcotic drug traffickers to make it a good market.

"If one of them consume 0.2 grams a day it means 80 kilograms of narcotic drugs is needed a day or 2.4 tons per month and 29 tons per year," he said.

The Indonesian consul general in Hong Kong, Chalief Akbar Tjandraningrat said there are at present 28 Indonesian citizens involved in narcotic cases in Hong Kong

"Of them 12 are still detained while 16 others have been sentenced. In Macau the number of 10 and most of them are couriers and women," he said
