TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Two teenage Indonesian girls currently facing capital punishment overseas may be granted some leniency, according to the spokesman of a special task force convened to look into Indonesians facing death abroad.
Humphrey Djemat said on Thursday that the Singaporean government might grant migrant workers Nurhayati, 16, and Fitria Wahyuni, 17 some leniency on account of their young ages.
"Their legal representative in Singapore have said they may receive some leniency in regard to their punishments," Humphrey said at the Coordinating Ministry for Politics, Law, and Security in Jakarta. “Their ages on their passports had been falsified to allow them to work overseas.”
Djemat added that Nurhayati had been charged with the murder of her employer’s 4-year-old child, while Wahyuni had been convicted for the murder of for her employer. Their trials are still in the initial stages. The taskforce is planning to meet their legal representation in Singapore in order to discuss about the necessary measures needed to expatriate both workers.
