Bali Governor I Made Mangku Pastika has denied Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama’s claim that the resort island is one of the main suppliers of dog meat to the capital.
Bali had, said Pastika, never supplied dog meat to other regions, as the island had for several years been struggling with outbreaks of rabies.
“It is out of the question that Balinese dogs should leave the island to be consumed elsewhere. Many of them are infected by rabies. We are quite clear about the prohibition,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.
Last week, Ahok said that his administration would regulate and monitor the distribution of dog meat, something that was previously uncontrolled, to prevent Jakarta residents from consuming diseased meat.
