The Bali Police have announced that Kuta Police chief Comr. Ida Bagus Dedy Januartha has been declared guilty by a police ethics tribunal of extorting several Australian tourists last year.
“The ethics tribunal has demoted the former Kuta Police chief and instructed him to apologize to the Bali Police chief, which he has done,” Bali Police spokesperson Hery Wiyanto said.
According to the ethics commission, Januartha violated articles 7 and 13 of National Police chief regulation No. 14/2011 on the police’s code of ethics.
“The investigation into the pornography case [striptease show] involving foreigners was not professional and did not follow procedure. Something [money] accepted from the perpetrators or another crime related to the case being handled tainted the National Police as an institution, particularly the Bali Police,” the ethics commission stated in its consideration.
The ruling stated that Januartha did not tightly supervise his subordinates, which enabled them to accept money from people involved in the case.
“He has been dismissed from his position and is now a staff member at the Bali Police station,” Hery said.
