Medan. A student at the Muhammadiyah University in Medan, North Sumatra, was arrested after reportedly killing his lecturer on campus.
Police arrested Roymardo Sah Siregar on Monday (02/05) on suspicion he had killed Nuraini Lubis, a lecturer with the university's School of Education.
Nuraini, who once served as the school's dean, was found dead with her throat slit at the school's bathroom on Monday afternoon.
Medan police chief Sr. Comr. Mardiaz Kusin Dwihananto said on Monday night that several witnesses had seen the suspect Roymardo engaging in a heated argument with Nuraini a few moments before.
Police immediately dispatched several officers to apprehend Royamrdo on Monday afternoon but several of Roymardo's friends tried to stop the arrest. A scuffle ensued before police brought Roymardo into their custody.
“Several students tried to stop our officers as they try to bring in the suspect. Some even attacked the officers. Currently the suspect is being held at the Medan City Police where he is being questioned. We don't know the motive yet,” Mardiaz said.
Journalists on the ground reported seeing officers in full riot gear deployed to the campus and several tear gas canisters were shot at the crowd trying to stop officers from taking the suspect.
The university has suspended all activities until Wednesday after the gruesome murder sent a shock to students and faculty members.
