An elderly Japanese couple were found dead at their rental house in Jimbaran, Bali, on Monday. Their bodies were found burned on the second floor of the two story house in the Puri Gading housing complex. The circumstances behind their deaths remains unknown.
Matsuba Nurio, 76, and his wife Matsuba Hiroko, 76, were discovered dead at around 11 a.m. local time on Monday by their foster son. The latter became suspicious that something bad had happened when he saw smoke emanating from the window of the balcony of his parents’ second floor. He did not live together with the couple.
The police deployed an investigation team to search the house. The team included personnel from the Denpasar Police’s general crime unit and the Indonesia Automatic Fingerprint Identification (Inafis) and a K9 dog squad.
Denpasar Police chief Sr. Comr. Hadi Purnomo said the investigation was still ongoing. “We need to conduct further investigations. We will continue tomorrow," Hadi said on Monday evening, after the investigation team searched the house.
When asked whether the couple had been murdered and their bodies burned by the perpetrators, Hadi refused to comment. "We have not yet ascertained whether they were murdered or not. We need to conduct further investigations before we reach a conclusion," he stressed.e police have questioned four witnesses, including the couple's foster son, a driver and their friend.
The couple's housemaid, Nari, said she was shocked when she learned of the incident. “I was informed by my neighbor. I'm shocked.”

The Denpasar Police have said they could not yet confirm whether or not a Japanese couple, found dead on Monday, were murdered although an external examination conducted by a forensic doctor team concluded that their deaths were unnatural.
“The investigation is still ongoing. We have searched the crime scene and will carry out further investigations based on the evidence we find,” the police’s general crime unit head Comr. Aris Purwanto told journalists on Tuesday.
Matsuba Nurio, 76, and his wife Matsuba Hiroko, 76, were found dead at their house at Puri Gading residential complex in Jimbaran, Bali, on Monday. Their bodies were found burned on the second floor of the two-story house.
The external examination was conducted on Tuesday after the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) team removed their bodies from the crime scene to Sanglah Hospital morgue.
Sanglah Medical Forensic Department head Dudut Rustiyadi said the forensic team had found many wounds on the couple’s bodies.
“On the male’s body, we found several open wounds, which appear to have been caused by sharp objects. There are circular cuts to the neck,” said Dudut, adding that many stab wounds were also found on the man's back.
Dudut said the team had found many wounds to the female's body that also appeared to have been caused by sharp objects. Plastic ropes were found on her neck and left hand.
“We need to conduct an autopsy to discover the cause of their deaths,” Dudut said. The team is waiting for approval from the victims’ family.

The Bali Police claim to have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a Japanese couple, Norio Matsuba, 76, and his wife, Hiroko Matsuba, 73, in Jimbaran.
"The suspect is I Putu A, 25. He was arrested on Monday at around 3 a.m.," Bali Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Hengky Widjaja said on Monday.
The police say the suspect is still undergoing interrogation, but a preliminary conclusion has been reached that the man robbed the couple before killing them . "The suspect needed money to pay off his debts," Hengky aid.
Norio and Hiroko were found dead at their rental house in the Puri Gading housing complex in Jimbaran, Bali, on Sept. 4. The bodies had been burned.
The suspect claimed he burned the victims and some parts of the house in order to get rid of evidence.
