6.5-magnitude quake rocks Indonesia

A strong 6.5 earthquake rocked Indonesia’s main island of Java late Friday evening, the US Geological Survey said, shaking buildings in the capital Jakarta.

The tremor was measured at a depth of 91 kilometers (56 miles) and struck less than a kilometer (mile) east-southeast of the coastal town of Cipatujah, USGS said.

The earthquake was felt in the capital Jakarta, about 300 kilometers (190 miles) from the epicentre, as well as several other towns on Java.

There was no immediate indication of a tsunami and authorities said there had been no casualties reported so far.
National disaster mitigation agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said there were reports of homes damaged in the city of Tasikmalaya, some 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the epicenter.

We are still evaluating the impact of the quake and will give an update later,” Nugroho said in a statement.

Jakarta resident Web Warouw was on the 18th floor of a building in the capital when the quake struck.
“Suddenly, we felt dizzy, but constantly… We then realized it was a quake and immediately ran downstairs,” the 50-year-old told AFP.

People in the coastal city of Cilacap evacuated as a precaution fearing a tsunami, although no alert had been issued for the area.

Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, or BMKG, issued a tsunami warning after an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of West Java on Friday night (15/12).
The warning is for the southern coast of Central Java and West Java.

The epicenter was at the Indian Ocean's floor, at a depth of 105 kilometers, 43 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya and 48 kilometers southwest of Sukabumi — both in West Java.

The quake was followed by another with a magnitude of 6.9. Each lasted about a minute.

According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) head Sutopo Nugroho, several houses collapsed in Tasikmalaya. The agency is now assessing the situation.

BNPT Central Java head Sarwa told Kompas TV that seawater entered the streets in the districts of Kebumen and Cilacap in Central Java.

Residents have been ordered to leave high-rise buildings until further notice.

Strong tremors were recorded in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung and Depok (West Java), Karangkates, Ngawi, Madiun and Nganjuk (East Java), Badung (Bali) and Mataram (West Nusa Tenggara).
No casualties have been reported.
