The Denpasar Industry and Trade Agency will develop the Kumbasari market, recognized as one of the city's centers of handicrafts and a popular tourist attraction, into a modern trade center. Head of the agency's trade division Laksmi Saraswati said Sunday they would use the vacant fourth floor of the market building to establish an information booth and a training center for traders. "We want the traders be able to improve their skills, not only conduct business as usual. Therefore, we will facilitate them with training and seminars," Laksmi said. To improve connections between traders and buyers, the agency will provide information about handicraft products from Denpasar. The information can be accessed through CDs, a website and brochures.
The agency will also build a telecommunications and techno logy room, and develop the existing e-commerce facility, which has been utilized by 161 artisans and entrepreneurs. The venue also boasts a meeting room that can seat more than 40 people, Laksmi added. "We are still building the facilities, including free Internet access. We are aiming to launch it by February," she said. Agency head Wayan Gatra said the agency would develop the vacant third floor of the market building as an exhibition room for traders supported by the Denpasar chapter of the National Committee of Crafts (Dekranasda). The agency is planning to hold product exhibitions regularly, in a bid to enhance the artisans' productivity and motivate them to produce more creative goods thereby attracting more visitors to the trade center. Gatra said the agency last December held a two-day workshop on entrepreneurship for students and the wider public.
The workshop was attended by chairman of HIPMI Denpasar Putu Gede Wiwien Gunawasika, as well as businesspeople and representatives from several banks. "We received good feedback from the workshop. Therefore, we agreed with HIPMI make them a regular fixture in the future," Gatra said, adding that both parties would draw up a memorandum of understanding on the issue
