The government says it is ready to pay a Rp 4.6 billion (US$520,000) fine to spare an Indonesian maid from execution in Saudi Arabia.
Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa said on Monday that the government would buy clemency for Darsem binti Dawud, who was sentenced to death by beheading by a Riyadh court in 2009 for murdering her employer.
“We will donate 100 percent [of the sum],” Marty said on Monday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Darsem, a migrant worker from Subang, West Java, previously said she killed her employer in self defense after he tried to rape her.
The victim's family agreed to spare her if she paid Rp 4.6 billion in compensation, also called blood money.
The Indonesian government would pay the fine despite a Saudi donor who offered to pay half the amount, Marty said, adding that the government has given legal assistance to Darsem.
