Wild Weather Forecast to Batter Jakarta for Next 3 Days.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency warned on Tuesday that Jakarta and some parts of West Java would continue to see torrential rains and windstorms over the rest of the week.
“We predict in the next three days extreme rain will persist, though it will be short in duration and will occur in the evenings, typical transition-period rain,” said Kukuh Ribudianto, from the agency also known as the BMKG.
Wild storms have pounded parts of Jakarta over the past few days. On Sunday, heavy rain resulted in flooding on the city’s main artery, Jalan Sudirman, while the next day, rains sparked heavy traffic congestion across the city.
Kukuh said provinces including Jakarta, West Java, Banten and Lampung would experience transitional weather until May, when most parts of Indonesia would enter the dry season. In the meantime, he said, rain could occur any time, and could be accompanied by windstorms or even hail.
“Expect more thunder and lightening in the next few days in Jakarta and some other cities like Depok, Sukabumi and Bogor,” Kukuh said, adding that traffic was likely to be affected because rain would occur early in the evening, when most workers were heading home.
“The rain will not go for hours, it might only last a few minutes, but there will be plenty of thunder and lightening, so be careful,” he said.
Last month, extreme weather caused dozens of huge trees to collapse, damaging cars and some buildings. Hail fell in the Senayan and Thamrin areas in the capital.
