JAKARTA (Reuters) - A 6.2 magnitude earthquake with a relatively shallow depth hit Sulawesi island in central Indonesia early on Monday, followed by at least two powerful aftershocks, officials said.
Reports from the area said the quake occurred 55 km southeast of Kendari, the island's capital, and probably struck the tip of the island.
Officials said the tremor was strongly felt in Kendari and two aftershocks measuring 5.2 and 6.2 were recorded soon after in the same region.
No tsumani warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
"It will be felt strongly there but it won't be devastating," Rahmat Triyono, an official at Indonesia's meteorology agency, told Reuters.
"Looking at the map, the epicentre is inland, but just at the tip, and there are several small islands there, so it will be felt there, too."
The United States Geological Survey said the quake occurred at 12:07 a.m. British time, 67 miles east of Baubau at a relatively shallow depth of 6.2 miles (10 km). It later adjusted the depth to 5.8 miles.
