The Indonesian maid who tried to hang herself at a maid hostel last Saturday remains in intensive care but is in a stable condition.
The Straits Times understands that Ms Sulastri Wardoyo, 26, who is warded at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, underwent a scan yesterday.
The maid, who is married with a child and is from Central Java, is said to have suffered brain damage after her suicide attempt.
Staff at the hostel said she was depressed after thrice failing an English-language entry test that all maids have to pass before they can work here.
She was found in a shower cubicle and staff cut the rope she had used to hang herself. They said her heart stopped three times as paramedics tried to resuscitate her.
Dr Hui Kok Pheng, a respiratory and critical care specialist in private practice who is not treating her, said severe brain damage can occur when the brain is deprived of oxygen for more than two minutes. Such patients would be in a comatose state and can have difficulty breathing.
Ms Sulastri's employment agency here is working with the Indonesian maid supplier and the Indonesian embassy to see how they can bring her family over. They are also looking at how they can help her pay her hospital bills.
