Japanese woman faces death in Indonesia for alleged drug sales attempt
(AP) - JAKARTA, July 7 (Kyodo)—A Japanese woman is facing the death penalty for allegedly possessing and attempting to sell more than 5 grams of marijuana in the Indonesian resort island of Bali, a local police officer said late Wednesday.
Mulyadi, director of the narcotics department at Bali police, told Kyodo News that the 36-year-old woman was arrested Saturday at her rental house in the resort area of Kuta with 32.09 grams of dried marijuana found in a package inside her bedroom.
At first, according to Mulyadi, the woman did not allow the police to raid her house.
From their early interrogation, the police suspected that she might plan to sell the marijuana.
Mulyadi said the woman had violated an article in the country's 2009 Narcotics and Psychotropics Law for trafficking more than 5 grams of narcotics or psychogropics.
"She faces death penalty and fine up to 10 billion rupiah ($1.2 million)," Mulyadi said.
