A mob of angry villagers of Cikaso hamlet, Bencoy, Cireunghas, Sukabumi, West Java ran amok on Sunday afternoon in protest to police operation to crack down on a traditional bamboo cannon contest.
The mob damaged everything in sight, including Ford Ranger police patrol car, belong to Cireunghas police station, Antara newswire reported.
The incident started following the complaint from some residents to the police station that they were disturbed by deafening sounds from the bamboo cannon contest, which was held to welcome the upcoming Idul Fitri celebrations.
Four police officers from the station came to disperse the contest but the crackdown got strong resistance from the locals who pelted the officers with stones.
Cireunghas police station has asked backup from Sukabumi police precinct to clamp down on the rioting.
