A fire destroyed hundreds of houses and part of the Malalayang bus terminal in Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi, on Sunday morning.
The cost of the damage was estimated to have reached into the billions of rupiah.
Smoke was first seen rising from a small restaurant in the area on Sunday morning, some witnesses revealed. Four fire engines deployed to fight the fire saw their initial efforts thwarted by strong winds, and the rapid spread of the fire in the area where most houses were made of wood, Tempointeraktif.com reported.
Johanis Woworuntu, a local official, said that the fire had reached the bus terminal but had not damaged any buses.
