A 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck Singkil Baru, Aceh Province nearly an hour past midnight on Tuesday, killing at least one and causing panic among residents.
The jolt was reportedly felt by the residents in Subulusalam, Aceh and Medan as well as other cities in its surrounding for about 30 seconds.
The tremor destroyed the Subulussalam Midwive Academy building and a house next to it.
Subulussalam Mayor Muara Sakti confirmed that at least a 12-year-old boy died in the incident.
"The victim came from the collapsed house," said Muara as quoted by Tribun Medan on Tuesday.
The North Sumatra Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said that the epicenter of the quake was 59 kilometers northeast of Singkil Baru, Aceh province in the depth of 78 kilometers.
