A massive marijuana plantation worth many of millions of dollars has been discovered in Aceh, it was reported on Thursday.
The bust coincides with the International Drugs Enforcement Conference in Bali, where National Narcotics Agency (BNN) head Comr. Gen. Gories Mere told delegates on Wednesday that Indonesia had some of the world’s finest cannabis.
A joint National Police, Indonesian Military (TNI) force conducted the operation after a tip-off, discovering the plantation that covered a size roughly equivalent to 16 football fields in a remote part of Suka Makmur subdistrict in Aceh Besar.
Aceh Besar Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Herman Sikumbang told Metro TV at the scene of the discovery that if they had arrived a day later, the marijuana would have been harvested.
“As soon as we received the information, we sent our officers up here,” Herman said. “The information turned out to be true and here we are.”
No arrests were made.
The crop was gathered up and burned on the spot, Metro TV reported.
Aceh is famous for its trade in marijuana, which is distributed by well-connected criminal enterprises throughout Indonesia.
