Sukabumi administration reports that prolong dry season has resulted in depleting water table at rivers as well as wells in the city, an official says.
"From 27 rivers and tributaries flowing through areas in the city of Sukabumi, we've monitored a significant drop in the water table by 40 percent," said Sukabumi Environment Agency head Rudi Djuansyah on Sunday as quoted by Antara news wire.
Rudi said that the lower water table caused much reduced supply of water for farming and fishery.
"The water crisis will of course affect most farms in the area and we can expect declining yield from our farms," he said.
Meanwhile, Susi Siswayanti, spokesman to tap water company PDAM of Sukabumi, said that the water crisis also dealt a blow to the supply of untreated water.
Susi said that the supply of clean water kept depleting as some springs get dry.
"The supply of untreated water plunges by 26 percent," she said. "Currently, we can only process 331 liter per second of tap water, lower than normal production of 450 liter per second."
