Residents of islands near Anak Krakatau continued to go about their daily activities on Thursday, despite recent warnings that the historic volcano has been showing an increase in activity.
"We do not consider it dangerous yet. We have witnessed these small eruptions for years," Billah, a resident of Sebesi Island, said Thursday, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Sebesi Island, inhabited by 1,200 households, is the island closest to Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Straight, and has frequently showered in volcanic dust from its small eruptions.
"The dangerous hot [volcanic] material has never made it to our island. Only volcanic dust reaches here," Billah said.
He added that the islanders maintained radio communication with South Lampung Disaster Mitigation Agency.
"We can quickly act on orders from officials if we need to leave the island or evacuate if there is a big eruption."
(but then it is not the 'hot stuff' they need to bother about, but rather that wet stuff what the fishes swimm around in, too late to get out of the way when it climbs up onto the beach!) siK.
