A scavenging competition held by Komunitas Peduli Ciliwung (Community care for Ciliwung) in cooperation with the Bogor administration collected 48,650 kilograms of waste from the Ciliwung River on Saturday.
Around 1,000 Bogor residents from 11 sub-districts from Ciliwung River banks participated in the event competing over the Bogor Mayor trophy and prize money of Rp 10 million.
“Participants collected 1,956 sacks of garbage weighing 48,650 kilograms in total. At least this can reduce waste volume in Ciliwung,” event coordinator Een Irawan Putera said Saturday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
He said first winner of the competition won the Bogor Mayor Trophy and Rp 5 million (US$567), second place received Rp 3 million and Rp 2 million for the third winner.
Een said the most important part of the competition was to raise people’s awareness of not throwing garbage into the river. “They can see themselves how much garbage there is in the river if they continue throwing their waste into it”.
