President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has been monitoring escalating political tensions in Aceh following the recent fatal shootings in the province, presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said on Friday.
“The President has also instructed National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo to conduct immediate investigation to reveal and arrest the perpetrators,” Julian told the press.
At least seven shootings, some of which were fatal, took place in Aceh in the past month.
Two of the shootings occurred on Dec. 31, 2011 with four fatalities. The first took place in the provincial capital Banda Aceh, killing one victim. The second occurred in Bireun regency, about 250 kilometers east of Banda Aceh, which left three people dead.
The latest shooting incident occurred on Thursday when three construction workers in Simpang Anak Galong village in Aceh Besar regency were severely wounded by gunfire.
Speculations have emerged the incidents were connected to the plan of Aceh incumbent governor Irwandi Yusuf, a former GAM member, to seek reelection for a second term.
Several bylaws, however, prohibit Irwandi to run for governor again which reportedly had fueled his supporters.
Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro previously said the gubernatorial election in Aceh and local elections in 17 regencies and municipalities in the province would be held simultaneously and on schedule on Feb. 16 despite the shootings.
