Nine people died and four others were seriously injured in a road accident involving a minibus, which was carrying 13 passengers from Pamekasan, Madura, and a wood-loaded truck in Jember, East Java, on Sunday morning.
“According to statements by several eyewitnesses and investigations at the scene, we have concluded the accident occurred because the minibus driver was tired,” Jember Police Traffic Unit chief, Adj. Comr. Wiwit Adi Satria, said Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.
Wiwit said that Edy, the minibus’ co-driver who replaced the driver, Syaifulloh, was driving at high speed when the bus collided with the truck.
He said police were continuing to investigate the accident.
The dead have been identified as: Ayu, 8; Bakir, 43; Edy Kurniawan, 48, the driver of the minibus; Fahmi, 8; Halimah, 35; Kandar 37; Rusmah, 60; Samsul Arifin, 35; and Sulastri, 30.
The injured have been identified as: Farid Wahyudi, 30; Slamet, 40; Syaifulloh, 35; and Umsi, 16.
