A four-year-old boy from Pesawaran, Lampung, died early on Sunday, three weeks after he was bitten by a rabies-infected dog.
Faisal Abdau, who lived in the village of Kampungbaru, located 60 kilometers north of Bandar Lampung, was rushed to a nearby clinic on Saturday evening after he suddenly began having spasms while he was playing soccer. He died at 3:30 a.m. the next day.
Faisal’s uncle, Suhaeli, said Faisal had just completed outpatient treatment after a rabies-infected dog attacked him in the face when he was playing outside his house three weeks ago.
“The bite wounds on Faisal’s nose and cheek had actually started to heal, but perhaps he could not resist the poison which remained in his body,” he told kompas.com.
Last year, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) estimated that 55,000 people worldwide died every year because of Rabies. (hwa)
