An eight-year-old child allegedly drowned a six-year-old in a hole at a construction site in Bekasi on Thursday over a Rp 1,000 ($0.10) debt.
“It happened on Thursday afternoon,” Bekasi Police chief Sr. Comr. Priyo Widyanto told Indonesian news portal Detik.com on Friday.
He said the suspect, an eight-year-old child, first met his victim, a first grader, at the Summarecon complex, a residential township development in the Rawa Bugel village, Bekasi. The suspect then allegedly pushed the victim into a hole before he drowned him.
Priyo said that a child could be brought to court if they were aged eight or older under the 1997 Juvenile Offenders Law.
He added that the suspect could be charged for violating Article 3 of the 2002 Law on Child Protection, which stipulates that anyone who commits child abuse or causes the death of a child could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of Rp 200 million.
