Jakarta Police are dispatching 1,000 personnel to assist the city administration in dealing with floods because heavy rains are expected to pour down on the capital in the evenings for the rest of the week.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said on Thursday the number of personnel could be further increased, or decreased, depending on weather conditions.
“Dealing with floods, the Jakarta Police traffic directorate is dispatching 1,000 personnel. We’ll work together with the regional administration,” Rikwanto said.
“For police, the main duty will be to deal with security, help evacuate [displaced] residents and control traffic around flooded areas so as to avoid congestion."
Rikwanto also said officers were equipped with several inflatable boats to help people evacuate.
A number of areas in West Jakarta and East Jakarta, as well as the Jakarta satellite city of Tangerang, reported flooding on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday after heavy rains hit the capital and its upstream areas to the south. As a result, at least 2,430 people were displaced.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has predicted medium to heavy rains in all five Jakarta municipalities on Thursday and Friday evenings.
