Around 500 members of an unidentified group launched an attack on Jl. RE Martadinata in Jebres district, Surakarta, Central Java, on Friday afternoon.
Two residents, identified only as Haris and Ngatimin, were injured by sharp objects during the attack, kompas.com reported.
Ngatimin, 63, lost two fingers of his left hand and sustained other wounds in his hands and in the back of the head.
He was reportedly about to close his bicycle repair shop when a number of people armed with sharp weapons and bats suddenly attacked him.
Police reportedly immediately rushed Ngatimin to a nearby hospital.
Haris, was also reportedly wounded in the arm by a sharp object.
"Haris was in front of the house and was suddenly attacked by a group of people," his brother Asmoro said as quoted by kompas.com.
Asmoro said the attackers then barged into the house and dismantled a barricade locals had erected.
The number of the people was twice as many as that of those who launched a similar attack a day earlier.
Surakarta Mayor Joko Widodo said he did not want to speculate on what the motives were behind the attacks.
"We don't want to connect this clash, which occurred in Gandekan, Jebres district, Solo [Surakarta], to a possibility that may harm my image," he said on Friday, as quoted by kompas.com, adding it was caused purely by misunderstanding.
He said the clash would not discourage him from running in the Jakarta gubernatorial election in July.
