Denpasar. After Jakarta police denied a permit for Lady Gaga’s concert in the capital, the Bali Representative Council has stepped in and suggested promoters shift the venue to the popular tourist destination.
“She is not rejected in Bali,” chairman of the Bali Legislative Council Commission (DPRD) I Made Arjaya said on Monday. “We are open [for the concert]. Please move the concert to Bali. We would be glad because Bali will be more well-known in the tourism world.”
Arjaya said if the concert took place in Bali, Lady Gaga, as an international figure, would aid the province.
“Her visit is purely for art, we will fully support it if she stages the concert on this island of gods.”
Balinese politician Ni Made Sumiati echoed Arjaya’s statement, asking the promoter to shift the concert venue to Bali.
“Bali is dynamic and flexible,” she said. “I’m sure [the concert] would not corrupt Balinese morality. What is there to worry about?”
Jakarta police had earlier refused to give a recommendation to the National Police to issue a concert permit because of opposition from the Islamic Defenders Front who claimed her show would be obscene.
Sumiati said people in Bali were not opposed to Lady Gaga’s artistic creativity, which has been interpreted as erotic by hardline groups.
“Our local singers show eroticism and have never been opposed,” she said. “The most important part is how far we control our morality.”
The promoter of the Lady Gaga concert, Big Daddy, is scheduled to meet with Jakarta Police on Tuesday to discuss the requirements needed to get a permit for the concert in Jakarta.
