Police officers in S. Sulawesi refuse rotation, go berserk
The Jakarta Post, Makassar Wed, September 19 2012
While rotations and reassignments are common for police officers, several officers in the Pare-Pare Police precinct in South Sulawesi refused to be transferred and went berserk.
“Around 20 officers from the Pare-Pare Police caused a riot at their office because they refused to be transferred,” said South Sulawesi Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Chevy Ahmad Sopari.
The angry officers yelled at their superior, Adj. Sr. Comr. Suprayitno, and said that they did not want to move to other police precincts. Some even tried to wound the Pare-Pare Police chief with a traditional cleaver when he tried to calm his subordinates.
According to Chevy, the officers were transferred to other police posts in other regencies, like Luwu, Tana Toraja and Enrekang, all in South Sulawesi, since those posts were understaffed.
“The Pare-Pare Police have too many officers,” Chevy said, adding that the rotation of officers also necessary ahead of the gubernatorial election.
The spokesman said that the angry outburst and indiscipline of Pare-Pare Police officers had damaged the image of law enforcement.
“All police officers have taken an oath to be ready to be posted anywhere. Now, they have broken their own oath,” he said.
However, he had yet to reveal what kind of punishment the disgruntled officers might receive.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the would-be-transferred officers were still protesting in front of their office. They insisted to meet with South Sulawesi Police chief Insp. Gen. Mudji Waluyo.
