Two students were killed in the latest clash between two different faculties at Makassar State University (UNM) on Thursday afternoon.
Rizki Munandar and Haryanto, both students of the engineering faculty, were both stabbed in the chest by unidentified perpetrators at the Haji Makassar Hospital. The two students had just visited their friend, who was injured in a clash between students of the engineering faculty and the art and design faculty a few hours earlier.
Rizki and Haryanto were passing outside the emergency room at around 5 p.m. when a group of students, allegedly from the art faculty, attacked and stabbed them.
Prior to the attack, students from the two faculties were involved in a clash at 3 .p.m. They used stones, wooden planks and miscellaneous sharp objects to attack one another on the university’s campus in Parangtambung.
The mayhem left the campus damaged, four parked motorcycles burned and dozens of windows in both faculty buildings smashed.
Following the clash, the police sealed off the university compound to avoid further brawls. The university also halted all academic activities.
UNM deputy rector Heri Tahir said the brawl may have been triggered due to a long period of animosity between the two faculties.
“Students from these faculties have been arch enemies for a long time and have been involved in many brawls,” he said.
Heri added that the university would expel any student found guilty of murdering Rizki and Haryanto. “There is no place for killers here,” he added.
On the same day, another brawl also erupted among students at the Indonesian Republic Veterans University (UVRI) in Antang, Makassar
