Riau Governor Rusli Zainal finally launched the Sultan Abdul Djalil Rachmadsyah Bridge in Siak Regency on Friday, after the launch had been delayed several times.
The 1,650-meter bridge, with a main span of 250 meters, making it the longest-arch truss bridge in Indonesia, broke the record of the Rumpiang Bridge in South Sumatra, which previously topped the rankings with a 200-meter main span.
The bridge, the development of which began eight years ago, cost Rp 359 billion (US$37,27 million) from the budgets of the Riau and Siak administrations.
“Finally, our dream of connecting Pekanbaru, Siak and Bengkalis has materialized,” said Rusli on Friday.
He hoped that the bridge could make the isolated east coast of Sumatra - which used to be accessible only by river transportation — more easily reachable.
