Dozens of elephants have been on the rampage in Tanjung Sepucuk village, Jambi, since a week ago, destroying the village’s palm and rubber plantations.
The herd of elephants wreaked havoc on the plantations, only 500 meters from the villagers’ houses, causing unrest among the locals, Tarmizi, one of the villagers, said on Thursday.
The villagers have been trying to drive away the animals by lighting fires along the roads and yelling at them, he told kompas.com.
“The elephants flee when we cast them out, only to return the next day,” said Bujang, another villager.
The locals have reported the case to the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), he said.
“But no officers have come,” Bujang added.
