Pekanbaru, Riau. A bull that was supposed to be slaughtered as part of Idul Adha celebrations in Pekanbaru on Sunday went on a rampage, sending panicked onlookers fleeing for their safety as it briefly found its way into a minimarket.
After the animal managed to get away from its would-be butchers at Al-Hudah mosque, a two-hour chase through the streets ensued, state-run news agency Antara reported. A car parked in front of the minimarket was dented by the bull’s horns, but nobody was hurt.
“When we tried to get the animal to lie down, all of a sudden he went berserk and kicked the people in charge of the sacrifice,” Saprial, who coordinated the proceedings, told reporters.
The slaughter of donated animals and distribution of their meat at mosques is a tradition connected to the holiday of Idul Adha, the Muslim feast of sacrifice.
A resident who witnessed the Pekanbaru scene, Ani Supriani, described the anxious moments when the bull was on the run, saying it kept running amok the whole time and tried to butt with its horns anyone approaching.
“Let it be a lesson for those in charge of the sacrifice,” Ani told Antara.
The hunt of the bull came to an end only when a rope attached to the animal’s legs accidentally got stuck on an electricity pole.
It was not immediately clear how much damage the bull had caused and who would be held responsible for compensating people’s losses.
