The Jakarta Globe, March 05, 2013,

The Bali government is reminding tourists not to travel in Bali during Tuesday’s Hindu holiday of Nyepi because no transportation will be available.

“[Foreign] tourists who want to spend holiday or Indonesian people who plan to go to the gods island should bring forward or delay the schedule a day [before or after Nyepi], because on that day all means of transportation will be paralyzed,” spokesman of Bali government I Ketut Teneng said on Tuesday, as quoted by Antaranews.com.

He said that all flights to and from Ngurah Rai International Airport and boats crossing to and to Bali’s coasts would stop operating for 24 hours during Nyepi starting on Tuesday, March 12, at 6 a.m. local time.

The six sea harbors that are shutting down in Bali include Benoa port in Denpasar, Celukan Bawang in Buleleng, Gilimanuk Harbor, which connects Bali to Java, and Padang Bai, which connects Bali to West Nusa Tenggara. Tanah Ampo harbor in Karangasem district, which usually serves cruise ships, and Nusa Penida port in Klungkung district will also shut down in honor of the holiday.

All cars, buses and other means of transportation will also not move from the parking areas on Tuesday, the spokesman said.

There are four taboos during Nyepi, the day of silence: working, turning on the lights, going out and having fun.

The majority of Bali’s nearly 4 million people practice a local version of Hinduism, although there is also a small Muslim population on the island as well.
