Three junior high school students in Ciawi, West Java, foiled a rape attempt by an ojek driver on Monday.
The trio — Aziz, 15, Ilham, 13, and Abdulrahman, 13 — were on their way home from school and passed a plantation in Tapos, Ciawi, at 2 p.m. when they heard the 14-year-old victim scream from behind some bushes.
“We saw a motorcycle parked, but there was no one on it,” Abdurahman said as quoted by state-run Indonesian radio station RRI on Monday. “Someone yelled for help, and we saw that the girl’s clothes were off.”
The three teenagers decided to call for help before they thwarted the attempted rape and chased after the perpetrator.
Ciawi police chief Comr. Sugianto said that the 16-year-old suspect told the victim that her boyfriend asked him to pick her up from school.
Instead of taking her home, though, the perpetrator took the girl to a plantation in Tapos, maintaining that her boyfriend wanted to meet her there.
“The victim was threatened with rape,” Sugianto said.
After the three students caught him, the suspect begged them to not take him to the police, and he offered the students Rp 20,000 to buy a pack of cigarettes in exchange for his freedom.
“I told them that it was cigarette money, but they refused the offer,” the perpetrator said.
His proposal made his pursuers even more upset and they proceeded to beat him. When police arrived on the scene, the suspect was injured.
The teenager is being charged under multiple articles of the Law on Child Protection. He faces a maximum of 15 years in prison.
The suspect told police that he watched a pornographic movie the night before the incident. He also admitted that he was jealous that the victim chose his friend to be her boyfriend instead of him.
