Six people died and nine were inured in an early Sunday morning collision on the Jagorawi toll road in East Jakarta, allegedly caused by Ahmad Abdul Qodir Jaelani, the 13-year-old son of divorced Indonesian music stars Ahmad Dhani and Maia Estianty.
“He could be charged under article 310 of the 2002 traffic law for negligent driving with six years in prison,” said Adj. Cmr. Agung Budi Laksono, head of the East Jakarta Police traffic accidents unit. “Especially because he is still underage. But we are still investigating the accident thoroughly.”
Police alleged that Abdul was behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Lancer that veered into oncoming traffic and hit two other cars.
Sr. Cmr. Rikwanto, a Jakarta Police spokesman, said that the accident took place at 1:45 a.m.
“Because [the driver] was not concentrating, his car hit the separating fence, crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a Daihatsu Grand Max with 13 people in it, which was pushed into a [Toyota] Avanza,” he said.
Agus Kumara, Agus Wahyudi, Ricky Aditya Santoso, Agus Surahman, Qomar and Nurmansyah were killed the in the crash. All victims were brought to the Police Hospital in Kramatjati Mitra Keluarga Cibibur and Melia Hospital in Depok for treatment and autopsy.
Agung said that Abdul, along with a friend who was also in the car, sustained injuries.
After the accident, Abdul was taken Melia Hospital but subsequently transferred to Pondok Indah Hospital in South Jakarta, with broken legs and other injuries.
Abdul has appeared on several Indonesian television series and recorded singles in a band, called “The Lucky Laki,” alongside his brothers. He is the youngest son of Ahmad Dhani, a member of popular rock band Dewa 19, and Maia, a singer, songwriter, producer and actress.
Agung confirmed that Abdul did not have a driver’s license and was still underage. The minimum driving age in Indonesia is 17. Police have conducted blood and urine tests to determine if he or his friend was impaired.
