The Sidoarjo Police are investigating the cause of a single bus crash on Monday, in which seven passengers died.
Adj.Comr. Budi Setiono, head of traffic division at the Sidoarjo Police, said the Harapan Jaya Bus crash occurred in Medaeng, Surabaya, at 5 a.m. local time on Monday.
“The bus was carrying passengers from Surabaya to Trenggalek. Several minutes after leaving the Purabaya Terminal in Surabaya, the bus hit a road separator and a street light near the terminal and veered off the road,” said Budi.
He said seven passengers, two of whom were female, died in the incident while other passengers sustained injuries. The dead victims were taken to the Sidoarjo Regional Hospital while the injured passengers were rushed to the Bhayangkara Police Hospital for medical treatment.
“We are still collecting information from a number of witnesses who were at the location when the incident occurred. We suspect the bus driver lost control of the wheel and hit the road separator,” said Budi.
Head of East Java Traffic and Land Transportation Agency Wahid Wahyudi said the results of a preliminary investigation by the agency found that the bus was running at high speed when the incident occurred and there were no sign of the driver’s efforts to brake.
“The bus was in fifth gear when the incident occurred, indicating that it was running at high speed,” Wahid.
