Jakarta:As many as 490 people were killed in traffic accidents during their journey home this Lebaran. The data excludes the number of people killed in accidents on their way back to Jakarta. “The majority of accidents involved motorcyclists,” the Indonesian Police’s Traffic Corps chief, Comm. Heru Trisasono, said yesterday.
Heru said that 51.1 percent or 1,532 cases on Java’s southern route involved motorcyclists and were caused by narrow and uneven roads. This year, one in six people died in accidents, up from one in four last year.
This Lebaran, there has been a 33 percent increase in traffic accidents compared to last year. However, the number of people killed in accidents dropped by 9 percent, while the number of people injured in accidents increased by 23 percent (serious injuries) and 58 percent (minor injuries).
Public Information Bureau chief, Brig. Gen. Ketut Untung Yoga, said that one of the factors contributing to the high number of accidents was the physical condition of drivers.
He called on the people to plan their journeys and check their vehicles.
