A total of 735 buildings in Sukabumi district were damaged in the wake of a 6.4-magnitude earthquake that rocked the western part of Java on Tuesday afternoon, a report said.
"The 735 damaged buildings are found in 36 sub-districts, and the number is likely to increase," chief of emergency section of the Sukabumi District Natural Disaster Mitigation Board (BPBD), Eka Widiaman, said on Wednesday.
Of the total, 175 buildings were seriously damaged, 177 buildings were moderately damaged, and 383 buildings were slightly damaged, he stated.
Based on the result of a survey conducted by the BPBD, most of the buildings had damages on their walls and roofs, he noted.
However, no fatalities were reported in the earthquake, which was centered in Lebak, Banten province.
Sukabumi district head Marwan Hamami and his ranks and files have also inspected the earthquake-stricken areas.
The BPBD has started to distribute emergency aid, including instant foods, among the affected people, he revealed.
"We will soon distribute aid to residents who cannot live in their houses any longer and are now staying at their relatives` and neighbors` houses," he pointed out.
Tuesday`s earthquake was felt by people in all sub-districts in Sukabumi district, and therefore, the number of damaged buildings may continue to rise, he remarked.
