The bodies of two teenage siblings, one of who committed suicide by jumping into the Bengawan Solo River in East Java, washed up in Kalitidu, Bojonegoro, East Java, on Monday.
Residents of Kalitidu found the body of 15-year-old junior high student Sukanti at 5 a.m. Almost seven hours later, residents then found the body of her brother, high school student Sutikno, 300 meters from where the teenagers threw themselves into the river.
Witnesses to the incident said Sukanti jumped into the river first, followed by her older brother Sutikno in an effort to save her. Both were dragged under the current.
The uncle of the two, Kasir, said Sukanti killed herself because she had broken up with her boyfriend, Parjo, an act she had foreshadowed through writings on her bedroom wall.
“I will die because Parjo broke up with me,” she wrote, as reported by news portal kompas.com.
Kalitidu Police are investigating the incident.
